Gibbs wins dramatic finish to Logitech Pro Invitational opener!

252 Kilometres of racing action was ended with a mad two lap dash to the end in dramatical circumstances for the season opener of the Logitech Pro Invitational Supercars Series hosted on iRacing this Wednesday night.

Qualifying saw James Scott’s Speedcafe Lobs Esports #088 Holden Commodore would take pole position in the dying stages of the 15 minute session with a 1:59.991, besting Madison Down’s #1 Trans Tasman Racing Commodore by 22 Thousandths of a second.

The top 20 from Qualifying would be covered by just over five tenths of a second as well, setting the stage for an intense race.

Of note was a penalty to the #94 of Jarrad Filsell, who would start from 43rd after several penalties in 2023. Jarrad was quickly on the front foot and looking to make a dent into the field by overtaking 11 cars to 32nd at the end of lap 1.

James Scott narrowly took Pole position in the final moments of Qualifying

Evolution Racing Team’s Ethan Grigg-Gault would take advantage of squabbling ahead of him to launch down the inside at T7 and into 3rd place from 6th on the starting grid.

The front end of the field went fairly quiet until the first round of pit stops from here, with most drivers looking to save fuel and gain the advantage with less time stopped than their nearest competition.

Lap 5 would see the first major incident of the night when the #19 9ine5ive Simsport entry of Dylan O’Shea would run off line at Turn 15. Andrew Gilliam would attempt to sneak down the inside but pinch a front brake and run wide into O’Shea creating a major check up that would see Beau Albert put into the inside barriers at the exit of 16 and end any chance of a strong finish for Beau’s debut night in the series.

James Scott would lead the race from Madison Down and Brady Meyers, with Meyers getting by Grigg-Gault on Lap 12. Scott would pit from the lead on Lap 17 and opt to cover off any benefit of fresh tires and an undercut.

Meyers would dive to the lane on lap 19 as he clawed his way to the rear bumper of Madison Down. Down would opt to run long and give up track position before pitting at the end of Lap 21.

A wild run into turn 1 on the opening lap

Fawzan El-Nabi would make a strong showing for the Synergy Sim Racing outfit and would take on less fuel at this round of stops to jump Griffin Gardiner and move inside the top 5.

Having a strong but quiet night at the office as well was the #28 Mustang of Richard Hamstead. Resurfacing after the first stops in 7th place right on the gearbox of Gardiner, but with a hard charging Jarrad Filsell only a couple of seconds further back in 8th place. Filsell had gained 35 spots by the end of lap 21.

The run to the 2nd round of stops would be largely sedate with the top 8 being largely spread out until Meyers would catch Scott with his slightly fresher rubber, and Down catching them just before the last stops would begin.

Scott would lock front brakes on the run to the Hairpin at T7 on Lap 28, creating enough of a gap for Meyers to get by on the inside.

Luke Rosella from the Speedcafe Lobs Esports outfit would trigger the first Safety Car of the night after blowing his engine on a downshift into Sunset Bend (T17) on Lap 30 and failing to get back to pit lane. This would be the catalyst for the last round of pit stops for anyone who was yet to come to the lane.

As the train of cars would be normalised the running order would be Meyers, Scott, Down, El-Nabi, Grigg-Gault, Gardiner and Filsell to round out the top 7. Filsell would sense an opportunity in the water as the Safety Car would negate a 15s margin to the leaders.

"The top 20 from Qualifying would be covered by just over five tenths of a second as well, setting the stage for an intense race."

The race would be restarted on lap 34 with Filsell getting great drive off T7 to end up down the inside of Gardiner at T10 and move into P6.

From this point forwards all drivers would sense the urgency to grab spots where they could and at nearly every corner there would be a 2 wide situation somewhere in the field.

James Scott would crawl all over the rear bumper of rival Brady Meyers, with Madison Down looking to take advantage on the pair of them. This would start with front to rear contact from Down into Scott, with Scott then bumping into Meyers as well at the hairpin on Lap 36. Meyers would struggle mid corner and Scott would take the opportunity with Down following suit.

From here a stoush for the ages would kick off between race leader James Scott and Madison Down whilst Meyers would attempt to recover and pressure them both.

Contact at the final turn between Down and Scott on lap 38, would see them connect and run into the outside barriers before ricocheting back into the horde of traffic. Meyers would be too close to respond and unable to find a way out.

All counted, 16 of the 44 entries would be damaged in some manner, meaning more than a third of the field would be injured as the Stewards would scramble to attempt to get the race back underway with 4 laps left in the event.

The lap 38 crash claimed ended many of the front runners races

Unable to continue would be James Scott, Brady Meyers, Jarrad Filsell, Wayne Bourke, Jake Burton, Joshua Anderson, Marcello Rivera and Andre Yousseff. Griffin Gardiner would survive the melee only for his internet connection to give out whilst he had the lead of the race under Safety Car.

Down and Grigg-Gault would both survive, but would have significant damage.

Richard Hamstead would assume the lead of the race, with Grigg-Gault immediately behind, followed by Madison Down, Robert Gibbs, Tom Freer, Hayden Veld, Dylan Rudd, Jacob O’Reilly, Jobe Steward and Matthew Bowler rounding out the top 10.

With Sim Racing not requiring the use of Tow Trucks and other course vehicles to rescue all of the stricken cars, the race was able to be restarted with two to go.

Richard Hamstead would cross the line first, before suffering from a 30s Post Race Penalty, which would hand Robert Gibbs his first win in the series as well as his first ever podium. Tom Freer would manage to collect 2nd and Hayden Veld 3rd.

Madison Down would fall to 6th at the line, but also receive a 30s Post Race Penalty which would drop him to 31st in the standings.

The bulk of the top 10 would record their best ever finishes in one of the craziest ends to a race I’ve ever witnessed.

There are outstanding protests related to the outcome of this race so results are not final right now. To keep up to date with final results click the link below:

5 Key Points for Sebring with Brady Meyers

In the heart of Florida lies the legendary Sebring International Raceway, a hallowed ground for motorsport enthusiasts and the now traditional opening round of the Logitech G Pro Invitational Series. As Round 1 approaches, the spotlight shines on this historic circuit, where drivers will battle for supremacy amidst its challenging twists and turns.

Among those gearing up for the intense showdown is Trans Tasman Racing's seasoned driver, Brady Meyers. With years of experience and numerous accolades under his belt, Meyers stands as a beacon of insight into the intricacies of Sebring's unforgiving tarmac.

We delve into the mind of Brady Meyers as he reveals five pivotal points crucial to conquering Sebring Raceway. Drawing from his wealth of experience, Meyers offers a unique perspective on navigating the circuit's challenges and seizing victory in one of the championship's most prestigious events.

1. Attrition

The start of the season brings new names, and new opportunities to make a name for yourself - look for plenty of attrition towards the midfield in the early stages of the race with a few opportunistic moves to be had.

2. Bumps & Setup

Being an old airfield the track is notoriously bumpy, making car setup crucial for not only laptime, but tire degredation and management.

3. Strategy

With attrition comes the likelihood of safety cars - be ready to pivot at a second's notice.

4. Slowdowns

The track has some sneaky slowdowns, ready to punish the unaware. Particularly harsh at the start of the race, be on the lookout for cars serving slowdowns to cause a bit of chaos.

5. Patience

Being a longer race it is important to exercise patience when caught in the train - the race is never won in the first lap first corner, however you can lose it! Ultimately a solid result at the opening round can really help set up your year.

Gearing up for 2024: A Preview of the Pro Invitational Series

Its back….The moments before lights out for 2024. Tension builds. Old rivals renew their commitments to being first past the flag. New colours for some, new faces too, but the same old passion, commitment and hard work got these guys here. Time to settle it on the track.

Last year

To sum up 2023 - leading the championship seemed like a curse, the battle for the title was a constant see-saw of multiple drivers getting to the lead, then getting involved in something they probably shouldn’t have.

The enduro’s all of a sudden changed the script. Luke Rosella & Harley Haber drove a masterclass on a night where the Co-Drivers got a real working over. For the first time, I really felt myself asking the question “Are the series’ irregulars going to decide this championship? Could someone employed for 2 rounds a year be a defining factor in a 10 round title?”

Who could forget the final stanza of Bathurst. 1000km of racing condensed into about an 80km sprint. Scott v Down v Meyers. Who could forget?

Then to polish off the season, some made their strategy and rulebook comprehension shown where others failed to do so. Who’s taken that learning in the off season? Who studied up prior to 2024? When the drivers encounter those high, high pressures this year who will be transformed into diamonds, and who will be left standing on the side of the road.

But that's the thing about the past, it doesn't matter anymore and the next result is the only one worth thinking about.

A Bathurst finish worth of the great race in 2023

2024 points of interest

5 Rookies will be making their debut at Round 1:

  • Andre Youssif - Altus Esports Australia
  • Michael Whiting - Fishy Motorsports
  • Connor Nixon - Vermillion Motorsports
  • Jacob O’Reilly - Vermillion Motorsports
  • Zachary Rattray-White - Vermillion Motorsports

5 drivers previously used in a Co-driver role will also be making their full time debut as well!

First, the obvious point. Vermillion Motorsports has come out of nowhere and put together a well functioning Supercars programme. First attempt and they immediately put 3 drivers straight into the series.

Second, what a start to the year for Jarrad Filsell. Some might look at the Lobs Esports driver as a bit of a villain after multiple trips to the stewards’ office last year. Turning over a new leaf? Maybe…. But maybe being forced down the route of the Qualifying series brought out a renewed energy and vigour. Either way, he’s in form for Round 1, maybe the extra laps have helped to find the hundredths of a second required to be at the front.

Jarrad Filsell swept the 2024 Qualifying Series

Time for some numbers!

3 seasons - 3 starts from Sebring

2022

4 cars covered by less than 6 tenths of a second created a phenomenal finish won by TTR’s Brady Meyers, with TTR teammate Jake Burton running out of fuel within touching distance of a win.
2x TTR cars in the top 4

2023

TTR’s Madison Down and Brady Meyer’s were separated by 4 tenths at the line. 2 years in a row 2 TTR cars in the top 4 separated by 3-4 tenths of a second.

Conclusion? Trans Tasman always get their campaign off to a flying start from Sebring!

Additionally, and for me the key factor, paint has been swapped on the final lap inside the top 10 on both trips to the old American Airfield.

I’d be keeping my eyes out for probably a strong run from the NineFive crew as well. Shawn Mcnamara picked up a golden ticket and Griffin Gardiner was also on song - Qualifying with only 3 rounds from the Qualifying Series.

What about Madison Down? He’ll be here defending his title. He’s won just about every bit of Supercars silverware you possibly can. He won this race last year. Odds on favourite, but not by much. I had to know, what keeps the motivation kicking?

“I’m just competitive. I love the challenge of extracting every last bit of pace and the satisfaction of executing better than anyone else. We all love to win and hate losing so even after 15 years of sim racing I still want to be at the front fighting for wins.”

"We all love to win and hate losing so even after 15 years of sim racing I still want to be at the front"

LOBS Esports is going to be one of those topics that gets discussed a lot - lets look at their driver roster as the team makes their debut.

  • James Scott
  • Jarrad Filsell
  • Dylan Rudd
  • Luke Rosella

A number of drivers with a tonne of talent means this team will regularly be competing for wins. Something else to keep in mind is going to be their relationship with some of the best options in terms of potential Co-drivers. We won’t know for certain until we get to Sandown, but there are already rumours circulating this is where Brodie Kostecki will be driving…. Given everything going on for him right now that may not materialise, but keep your mind open and anything can happen.

Something of note is that the LOBS Esports drivers left a very tenuous relationship with Synergy Sim Racing as well. Ultimately that leaves Synergy in a weaker position and means that the target for team Synergy moves down a half step. Could this moving around in the driver and teams market play out on track? When its no longer dealing with a “team car” anything could happen… I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on this as it develops!

With that in mind, its going to be a bumpy ride! Tune in to see all the action from 7.45pm AEDT on Wednesday 13th March as 2024’s Logitech G Pro Invitational gets underway!

From Novice to Notable: Zack Rattray-White

Vermillion Motorsports, a team on the rise in the Supercars arena, has found a gem in Zack Rattray-White. Despite being a relatively new face in the series, Zack has already demonstrated exceptional skill and composure behind the wheel, propelling himself to the forefront of the 2024 Qualifying Series.

With the Main Series grid for 2024 within tantalizing reach, Zack's performance has been nothing short of impressive. Currently positioned at P12 in the standings, he sits comfortably within the top 20 cutoff, marking a significant achievement for both himself and Vermillion Motorsports. The final race at Fuji looms large, presenting Zack with a chance to solidify his standing and cement his place among the elite drivers of the series.

Zack's journey to prominence reached a pivotal juncture at Hockenheim, where he delivered a breakout performance, crossing the finish line in an impressive P7, he showcased his ability to compete at the highest level, earning the respect of his peers and admirers alike. It was a statement race that underscored Zack's potential and hinted at even greater accomplishments on the horizon.

On his performance at Hockenheim for Round 3 Zach stated:

"By far one of the better races I’ve ever completed in the Supercar. Our strategy really made our race in the end, we knew when to fuel save and when to push. Our stops were really well executed. Overall a really good way to clap back at a mediocre round at Magny Cours due to a wheel disconnect."

It has been a fast start for Zach in Supercar competition who has only been actively working on his craft in these unique cars for a seemingly short amount of time.

"Started driving the Supercar competitively in late 2022 [...] In 2023 I started to get a decent tempo with the car and started to understand it a bit more in the setup department scoring some solid finishes. Then in late 2023, I joined Vermillion Motorsports and yeah, our V8 program now is doing alright."

Vermillion Motorsporst has shown a strong presence so far in the Qualifying Series with Jacob O'Reilly and Connor Nixon both also showing some competitive pace to this point. When asked about how the team has helped him in the Qualifying Series Zack commented:

"Just good vibes, not much more than that really. We put in a lot of practice and really push each other, but at the same time we don’t try to take it too far and make it a painful process. Overall just a lovely bunch of people that I really get along with. Very happy that I can say this is my home for now in the sim racing world."

On the Bubble with Brady Baldwin

There's only one race left for drivers to lock into the 2024 Pro Invitational Series as Fuji will host the Qualifying Series finale. Brady Baldwin finds himself on the bubble and in 20th position and we took some time to talk to him ahead of the finale.

R: Three rounds complete and you're right on the bubble in Position 20 right now and 24 points clear of the cutoff. How do you evaluate your performance in the 3 races up to this point?

BB: Definitely better than what I expected! Coming into this series I wasn’t 100% sure where I would stack up as I have only taken the supercar semi-seriously for the last 6 months. I have felt like I have improved each and every round and gained more confidence. Hopefully, we put in one last good performance and make the big dance!

R: You have a reputation as an accomplished dirt driver and are now transitioning to Supercars. How do you feel you're adapting to Road Racing?

BB: It's been a massive learning curve for sure! I often got frustrated when I wasn’t improving despite putting in more and more laps but it's slowly coming more naturally. I am very fortunate to be a part of Synergy Sim Racing and have a great group of guys who have guided me through the last 6 months and hope to repay the faith they have in me by making the Pro Invitational Series.

R: As a part of the Synergy Sim Racing stable which has 4 cars in the Qualifying Series, how has that helped you so far over the opening rounds?

BB: It's been a huge help for sure! All 3 have been super helpful and we have been putting the laps in together. Jordan Ross has been great with some driver coaching when he's not calling me a wobbler haha. It's also very helpful to have a benchmark to chase as well with Jordan and Fawzan being right up the pointy end every race, and many others behind the scenes helping out has been awesome!

R: With only Fuji left to lock yourself into the Top 20 there's a lot of pressure to have a strong result. How do you approach the final race?

BB: I think I approach it like any of the previous races. Get a few nights of practice in and try to get comfortable and the pace should be there. I feel I have been easily good enough for a top 20 every week so hopefully that continues. If we can avoid lap 1 drama unlike at Hockenheim. I back myself to be in a good enough position to lock in, but it's V8 Supercar racing, anything can happen!

R: Lastly, how much would it mean to you to be on the grid at Sebring for Round 1 of the Pro Invitational Series in March?

BB: It would mean the world to me honestly. It is the premier series in Australia hands down, it's the one you want to be a part of. Coming from a completely different discipline which I have had some success in to then make the Pro Invitational Series would be massive. It will also fast-track my progression by racing with the best drivers in these cars over 12 rounds would be great as well!
