Insights into Taipan Esports

We're a few rounds into the Logitech G Supercar Pro Invitational so we took the chance to chat with Taipan Esports team boss Benn Anthony about how the season has progressed so far for his driver Greg Favelle.

You lost a couple of drivers prior to the pro series kicking off to a rival team, and you signed Greg Favelle, a relatively unknown driver, it must be satisfying seeing his potential so far in the first two rounds?

Yes, whilst we originally had 3 entries in the Pro Series and seeing those 3 go to another team was very difficult to deal with at the beginning, however, if people do not want to be here and part of our team, as a team, we don’t want them here. Moving on we are very happy having Greg representing Taipan E-Sports in 2022. Greg is a very good sim racer, having shown his dominance in the latest V8 Veterans season winning the championship. I think everyone can see the potential Greg has, being the oldest driver on track racing against all these seasoned young guys he is definitely holding his own.

Although his results haven’t been great, with a best finish of 34th, and best qualifying of 28th, it is probably fair to say that this doesn’t represent what we have seen from Greg in terms of speed, what are you guys working towards to unlock that potential and get results?

The results Greg has achieved this season in the races no-where near reflects his speed and capabilities. Damage in Round 1, bad call on pit stop and first lap shenanigans in Round 2 have unfortunately resulted in bottom of the order results. However, we are reviewing each round, learning from our mistakes and apply those findings to the next race to move Greg up the order.

Having a single entry in the pro series is obviously a great achievement, but also a bit hard to fight with a single entry, what is the team doing behind the scenes and before rounds to help Prepare Greg?

Having a single car entry is exceptionally difficult when you compare it to SSR with 10 cars, TTR with 8 who can all work together for a common goal. We are slowing working behind the scenes trying to build our resources, including particulars in fine tuning setups, perfecting race craft and strategy calls. It is a big undertaking for a 1 car team, however, when presented with the opportunity to participate in the inaugural series, you can’t say no due to limitations in the team.

Tune in for Round 4 of the Logitech G Pro Invitational Supercars Series on July 13th to watch Greg Favelle in action and taking it up to the big team!

On the Bubble: Brett Loxton

The Logitech G Pro Invitational Series is the championship that everyone wants to be a part of and the organisers still get frequent questions on how to get involved as a driver.

So far, the initial 40 drivers in the inaugural series have put on a great show after just two rounds. As we know though, only the rop 20 get automatically locked in for the 2023 Season. So for that one person in 21st at the conclusion of the series, there will be heartbreak at being so close to locking in when the qualifying process in 2023 will undoubtebly be hotly contested.

After each round we sit down and talk to the driver that is placed in that 21st position and this week it’s Team Jinx Shifters - HJR's Brett Loxton.

Brett, you are our driver “On the bubble”…….21st, the top 20 get through, have you been happy with how your series has gone so far?

To be on the bubble after 3 rounds, I'm happy with that considering the poor qualifing I've had so far.

Before the start of the series, what were your goals?

My goals before the start of the series was to finish in the top 15 and get some top 10 finishes along the way.

What will it take for you to get into the top 20?

I think to make the top 20 I'll definately need to qualify better and a bit more race pace wouldnt hurt. The last round I knew would be a bit of a challenge for me as I haven't any confidence around Red Bull Ring and round 2 was a bit of an unkown having never driven around Winton before but I'm confident I can start pushing forward the rest of the season.

How important is it for you to make the top 20 so that you don’t have to go through the qualifying series?

I think the impotance of making the top 20 is two fold. Not having to go through the qualifing series removes a bit of pressure but I think for me its more about proving to myself and everyone else that I'm good enough to officaily be in the top 20 drivers. If I have have to go through the qual series I'm confident I can make it make back in but not having to do it will be the boost of confidence I need for next season.

And finally what are your thoughts on the series?

I think the series so far has been good. The quality of driver talent in the field means you cant just rock up, you need to be prepared for every race. The series officials/organizers have also been holding the bar high for everyone which is great to see.

Thanks for the chat, Brett, we wish you luck for future races and hope that you can get “off the bubble”

Getting to Know Jamie Dike

Its been a tough start for Jamie Dike in the Logitech G Pro Invitational Supercar Series, but there has also being encouraging signs. Qualifying 27th at Winton, but also having a pair of 24th finishes at Winton and Red Bull Ring is nothing to sneeze at considering these are the best 40 Supercar drivers anywhere. What makes it even more likely that the potential is there is that at Red Bull Ring, he suffered an equipment malfunction mid race which brought the safety car out and still finished 24th. That may have been a top 20.

Tell us about what it has been like being a single car entry in the series, what are the difficulties and what is the team doing behind the scenes to back you?

It's been quite difficult as a single car entry. I don't get a lot of comparable data to go off and strategy ends up being determined on the day rather than pre-planned. Outside of setup, the team is helping me immensely during the race with notes on other drivers, who I'm battling, their strategies and spotting.

Fishy is a great little team, they have plenty of potential talent. Do you think we will see more Fishy cars enter the draft series and try to get a place in next years Pro Invitational?

Definitely! The team are pushing in a lot of different cars and leagues to show what we can do. Unfortunately due to a league overlap/clash we haven't really been able to show our full potential in SCOPS, but our progress over the last 12months has been outstanding.

After racing consistently against some of the best drivers in this car, what are some areas you are working on, or that you have identified you would like to improve on?

Nerves! Remembering that even though I am towards the back, there are a lot of drivers I can actually match given the effort. Also the start of the calendar has been difficult for me as I don't perform on those tracks well. But from round 5 onwards LOOK OUT!

What is your team doing behind the scenes to help you set the car up each week? Have you started to use VRS or Motec or any other systems to help improve your car and how is that benefitting the team overall?

The team uses VRS. When i have the time Motec can help but a lot of the improvement comes from trial and error of setting up the car ourselves and understanding how the setup vibes with the flow of the track. It may be a backwards approach but it works for us.

What do you think you can achieve this year in the series, what do you think is possible?

I can see top 30 overall being achievable. Top 25 is definitely possible and top 20 is obviously the goal.

Finally, we thought we’d be cheeky and ask, is there any word on who might partner you in the endurance races? Your team has done a lot of endure racing, it looks like it will suit you guys, you must be looking forward to it?

Ah yes haha. Blake Delaney will be my co-driver for the series. A extremely quick bloke that can fuel save like it's liquid gold. Enduro racing is the team's specialty, entering everything we possibly can. We are looking forward to it and frankly wish there were more!

Stanaway and Freer hit it off!

Richie Stanaway completed his first round of the Logitech G Pro Invitational Supercar Series at Red Bull Ring and immediately hit it off with SSR’s Tom Freer. Stanaway showed glimpses of speed throughout the night, appearing near the top of the time sheets throughout practice, as did Freer. But it was when the two found each other on track that sparks began to fly.

After the second safety car restart, Freer got shuffled back into Stanaways clutches and it wasn’t long before the fun kicked off. Stanaway passed Freer to move close to the top 10, a few laps later Freer making a move on Hamstead, who in turn made a move on Stanaway which escorted Stanaway off the circuit. Stanaway’s spotter immediately reported the move to race control but it was deemed play on. Richie decided to take himself out of the battle and opted for an early pit stop, an undercut he thought would move him away from that pack.

A few laps later, Freer would pit, and when he took to the track again Freer on the fresh rubber cruised up to the back of Stanaway and put a move on at turn 4, but this is where the gloves came off. Not content to sit behind, the Simblacks machine immediately tried to pass into the second last corner, pushing Freer into a slowdown. Freer incensed by the contact retained position and made a double block move down the front straight to hamper the run of Richie, both of them coming in way too hot at turn 1 and allowing Hobson to slice through.

Aggravation levels rising as Simblacks were reporting Freer, and Freer reporting Stanaway. Eventually the final passing manouver was at turn 3 by Stanaway, escorting Freer wide and giving him no room to fight back. The SSR machine had no more tyres left as the pack behind had now caught up, shuffling Freer down to 16th, whilst Stanaway will be ruing missing out on a maiden top 10, coming come in 11th.

It was a bruising battle, the gloves were off. Tune in on July 13th to see these two resume the fight!
